Course & Training: Advanced Dental Imaging And 3D Diagnosis When Treatment Planning Dental Implants.


This two-day course is designed to provide implantologists of all levels the ability to confidently integrate three dimensional diagnosis and treatment planning in their daily practice.  The program will consist of lectures and case presentations, over-the-shoulder hands-on computer software training, practical hands-on exercises and a live-surgery demonstration during which use of the computer generated surgical guide and accessories will be demonstrated. In addition, anatomical interpretation and sequential diagnostic protocols for implant planning and placement will be taught and explained. On the second day simulated surgical implant placement will be practiced on computer generated models from the scans submitted by attendees. In the afternoon there will be a live surgery demonstration during which a computer generated surgical guide and accessories will be demonstrated.


Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the importance and advantages of cone-beam imaging.
  • Assess implant recipient site anatomy three-dimensionally.
  • Differentiate abnormal findings versus artifacts.
  • Identify vital structures and tagging them on a CBCT study.
  • Utilizing software tools to enhance visualization and diagnostics.
  • When to refer to an ENT for further evaluation.
  • Identify the prosthetic need for site preparation and/or preservation.
  • Cone beam CT evaluation using a sequential diagnostic protocol.
  • Perform interactive treatment planning on your own computer.
  • Utilize CBCT and virtual implant planning software to increase case success.
  • Know how to order and customize surgical guide design for each case.
  • Understand the workflow from obtaining a scan, to ordering surgical guides.
  • Utilize the In Vivo surgical guide drill handle kit.
  • Decision making when purchasing a CBCT unit.
  • Medico-legal ramifications of CBCT.

This 3D diagnosis and treatment planning program will be held at Miles of Smiles Implant Dentistry located at 801 Wayne Ave, Suite #G200 in Silver Spring, Maryland. Sessions on both days will start at 8 a.m. and end around 4 p.m. Lodging information will be sent upon receipt of your registration.

Dental Cyst Assessment Using Three Dimensional (3D) Dental Imaging

Conventional regular two-dimensional X-rays (2D) are not always sufficient to determine the extent and nature of a bone lesion or a lesion of the jaw associated with a tooth. In some cases the very presence of a lesion is only verifiable with 3D imaging because often 2D imaging superimposes neighboring structures and the actual lesion becomes blurred or less visible.

The situation presented here is one where there was no pain or any other symptoms at all. The patient actually came in for an implant consultation and this cyst was discovered. The patient was immediately referred out for biopsy and treatment. The lesion was found to be benign, it was cleaned out and bone grafting done to correct the defect.

Using Cone Beam CT (CBCT) Technology To Plan Complex Implant Placement In The Maxilla

This is a case report published in Prexion3D’s December 2011 newsletter.  All phases of this case were completed by Dr. Noumbissi. A patient had a missing tooth in the anterior maxilla, 3D dental imaging technology (CBCT) and software (InVivo5) were utilized to adequately and accurately plan the placement and temporization of a metal free zirconia dental implant.

The  CBCT radiation from the Prexion is extremely low compared to medical CT scanners. The InVivo 5  software was used to perform virtual implant placement prior to surgery. From the  implant placement simulation a surgical guide was generated using CAD/CAM technology.  The surgical guide was then utilized to place the implant in a precise manner allowing for much safer and more predictable implant placement.

Natural Temporary Crown On An Immediately Placed Zirconia Dental Implant

This is a very unique situation where a patient had an extensive medical history, multiple allergies including to metals, was opposed to getting root canal treatment on the diseased tooth and had high aesthetic requirements. A clinical exam was done, there was type II to type III mobility and the tooth was symptomatic.  The general dentist sent a two-dimensional peri-apical x-ray that confirmed suspicions root pathology. A Cone Beam CT scan exam (3D Imaging) confirmed the previous finding but also allowed to assess the possibility of and plan for an immediate implant placement with an aesthetic temporary crown.

Accurate And Precise Implant Size Selection And Placement Planning Using (CBCT) Scan Technology

The case presented here details the process by which Dr. Noumbissi uses dental Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) technology also commonly called 3D dental imaging to diagnose and plan the course of treatment for all our implant patients. This technology has been available in our practice since 2007. The images obtained from the CBCT are reconstructed with a specialized software called InVivo5 (

The diagnostic aspect of  the InVivo5 software allowed Dr. Noumbissi to visualize the patient’s bone and determine prior to surgery the volume (height and width) and the quality (density) of the bone at the projected implantation site. Critical anatomical structures like the floor of the nose in relation to the implant were also evaluated in a three-dimensional manner.

The implant planning aspect of InVivo5 software made it possible for Dr. Noumbissi to select the precise implant size and type specifically indicated to replace this patient’s front tooth. A surgical guide was also generated from the CBCT data;the surgical guide makes it possible for Dr. Noumbissi to transfer the virtual plan to the patient during implant placement.

According to the American Dental Association, the difference between saving and losing a knocked out tooth, is the thirty minutes following the incident.

To save the tooth, follow these steps:

  • Rinse the tooth in tap water.
  • Avoid scrubbing the tooth.
  • Insert the tooth into the empty socket quickly.

If you are uncomfortable inserting the tooth, put the tooth in milk or water Get to the dentist immediately.
