Sinus Lift Procedure
Sinus Lift Procedure
A sinus lift (sinus augmentation) is a specialized surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw, specifically in the molars and premolars. Our surgeon, Dr. Sammy Noumbissi, adds bone to either side of the nose between the jaw and maxillary sinuses. He typically performs sinus lift surgery when the height of the upper jaw bone is insufficient to support dental implants.
Why Is a Sinus Lift Needed?
Over time, several factors can lead to bone loss in the upper jaw:
- Tooth Loss: Missing teeth, particularly those not replaced soon after extraction, can result in the resorption of surrounding bone.
- Periodontal Disease: Advanced periodontal disease can damage the bone supporting your teeth.
- Natural Anatomy: Some individuals naturally have less bone height in their upper jaw, making dental implants challenging without additional support.
- Sinus Size: The size and shape of the sinus cavity vary from person to person. At times, before having ceramic dental implant surgery, a sinus lift is necessary if the sinus is too close to the upper jaw.
Benefits of Undergoing a Sinus Lift Procedure
Undertaking a sinus lift procedure can significantly enhance holistic dental implants’ success rate and improve oral health. With a sturdy foundation of bone, patients can enjoy:
- Stable Foundation: This creates a stable foundation for dental implants in the upper jaw where there might not be sufficient bone.
- Sinus Preservation: Helps prevent the sinus from encroaching on the jawbone, preserving the integrity of the facial structure.
- Enhanced Success Rate: Increases the success rate of dental implants by providing a more substantial base for the implant to integrate with the bone.
- Improved Aesthetics and Functionality: Enhances the aesthetic appearance and functionality of the teeth and jaw, supporting natural chewing and speaking.
- Personalized Approach: Dr. Sammy Noumbiss personalizes his approach to teach patient’s specific needs
What To Expect During The Sinus Lift Surgery
A sinus lift procedure involves the following steps:
1. Consultation and Imaging
Before the procedure, our dental implant surgeon, Dr. Sammy Noumbissi, conducts a comprehensive examination and CT scan to assess your sinus anatomy and bone structure.
2. Preparing the Surgical Site
Once under local anesthesia (and possibly sedation), Dr. Sammy Noumbissi will make an incision in the gum tissue where the back teeth used to be to lift the gum and expose the underlying bone.
3. Creating an Access Window
Our dental implant surgeon, Dr. Noumbissi, will create a small, oval window in the bone. The membrane lining the sinus on the other side of this window is then gently pushed upward, or “lifted,” creating space between the sinus floor and the jawbone.
4. Adding Bone Graft Material
Dr. Noumbissi carefully lifts the sinus membrane and packs the bone graft material into the space. The graft material can come from several sources, including your body, a cadaver, or synthetic materials.
5. Close The Incision
The dental implant surgeon, Dr. Noumbissi, will stitch the incision in the gum closed after the bone graft is in place. Over the next several months, the new bone will integrate with your existing bone to create a solid foundation for dental implants.
6. Healing Period
After the procedure, you’ll receive post-operative care instructions. It’s crucial to avoid activities like blowing your nose forcefully to allow proper healing.
7. Follow-Up
Our Miles Of Smiles Implant Dentistry team schedules a follow-up appointment to monitor healing and determine when the area is ready for dental implant placement.
Recovery and Aftercare Of A Sinus Lift
After the sinus lift surgery, you might experience swelling and minor bleeding. Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth recovery:
- Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Dr. Sammy Noumbissi and his team will provide specific guidelines on how to care for your surgical site, including medications and dietary restrictions.
- Avoiding Strenuous Activities: It is advised that for the first few days, avoid any strenuous activities that may increase blood pressure or disrupt the healing process.
- Use Saline Rinses: Gentle saline rinses can help keep the surgical area clean.
- Regular Check-Ups: Our Miles Of Smiles Implant Dentistry team will schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Noumbissi to monitor the healing process and ensure the bone graft integrates successfully.
